Sedigas publishes a “Study of the production capacity of Biomethane in Spain”

This study prepared by the Spanish Gas Association, Sedigas, In collaboration with PwC and the specialized consultancy Biovic, has the objective of analyzing the national potential of this renewable gas and providing knowledge that helps in the definition of its development plans and the national decarbonization strategy.

“Spain has a biomethane production potential – a renewable and indigenous energy source – of 163 TWh/year, a figure that would cover around 45% of the national demand for natural gas”

The analysis represents an update of the latest figures calculated in 2018 by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), which placed the available biomethane potential between 20 and 34 TWh annually in 2030, which could mean between 5% and 9% of the annual gas demand. The origin of this difference lies in the fact that the IDAE data did not include intermediate crops, as well as forestry and other biological residues that are more difficult to use, but with great potential, which have now been considered.

More figures from the study:

The development of biomethane potential in Spain would have meant a saving of up to 4.000 million euros in the bill to consumers in 2022.

Its use would mean the start-up of 2.326 plants specialized, which would mobilize an investment of almost 40.500 million euros, the equivalent of 3,6% of GDP, and would generate close to 62.000 jobs, between direct and indirect, associated with its operation and maintenance.

As a result, the emission of 8,3 million tons of methane would be avoided that, otherwise, would be released into the atmosphere naturally due to the decomposition of the waste reused to generate it.

For its characteristics, Castilla y Leon, Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha are the autonomous communities with the greatest potential, and together they account for 50% of the total national capacity.

The introduction of biomethane into the energy mix It is essential to meet decarbonization objectives and slow climate change.
