2021: Record year for biomethane production in Europe

The European biomethane industry broke all records and reached 1.023 plants producing in October 2021. Of them, 994 plants were located and published on the biomethane map by the EBA, the European Biogas Association, a collaborating entity of the II Renewable Gas Show to be held in Valladolid on October 5 and 6.

Compared to previous editions of the European biomethane map, the number of plants in Europe has increased considerably, with 483 plants in the 2018 edition and 729 in the 2020 edition.

Biomethane production has experienced notable growth in the last decade. While 2021 figures are not yet fully consolidated, 2020 saw the largest year-on-year increase in biomethane production yet, reaching a total of 32 TWh of biomethane in Europe. Production growth in 2020 was, in fact, double the growth of the previous year and an even greater increase is expected for 2021.

47% of the biomethane plants currently active in Europe are connected to the distribution network, it is known that 20% are connected to the transport network, that 10% do not have a connection to the network and for the remaining 23% of European plants there is no information available.

The role of France is of utmost importance because 91 plants have come into operation in 2020 and 123 plants between January and October 2021. After France, the countries that experienced the greatest growth in the number of biomethane plants are Italy and Denmark.
