BIOUP project activates

ACCIONA has launched the BIOUP project, Production of biomethane through the integration of surplus renewable energy into the WWTP

Acciona leads the BIOUP project, which will produce biomethane through the use of renewables, and whose objective is to develop and validate a technology that generates biomethane (95% CH4) from the biological transformation of hydrogen (H2) from surplus renewable sources and the carbon dioxide (CO2) contained in the biogas (60% CH4) that is produced in the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge.

Through BIOUP technology "it will be possible to enrich the biogas produced in the anaerobic digestion of sludge until it is transformed into biomethane, a gas with properties and characteristics similar to natural gas." This process “will increase the efficiency of cogeneration systems and can even be injected into the network from water treatment plants,” the same sources add.

Beside Acciona, which participates in the project as a coordinating entity, BIOUP has as strategic partners the University of Valladolid and CIEMAT, and is funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation through NextGeneration funds.

BIOUP technology adapts to the needs of WWTPs that have large volumes of anaerobic sludge digestion and a clear need to increase the energy efficiency of their operation. Furthermore, “BIOUP technology has a high potential for transfer to other sectors such as the treatment of urban solid waste, also important players in anaerobic digestion.”
