The main European industrial associations have called on the European Union to place biomethane at the heart of its strategy for reindustrialization, energy security, and climate transition. This message is reflected in the Joint Biomethane Declaration driven by European Biogas Association (EBA), which calls for a more agile deployment of this renewable gas to strengthen the competitiveness of European industry and reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels.
AVEBIOM, organizer of First Renewable Gas Fair, fully shares this approach and also emphasizes its direct participation in this European initiative, since It has been part of the EBA since 2024This addition strengthens the association's connection with the main European framework for collaboration and defense of biogas and biomethane, at a crucial time for the development of the sector in Spain and throughout Europe.
The statement released by the EBA points out that Europe already produces 22 bcm of biogas and biomethanea relevant industrial and energy base for making immediate progress in decarbonization. Furthermore, it points out that the EU continues to import around 90% of the gas it consumesThis reinforces the strategic value of biomethane as a native, renewable resource that can be fully integrated into existing gas infrastructures.
The document also focuses on the role of biomethane in energy-intensive sectors, such as the chemical, metallurgical, paper, and fertilizer industries, as well as maritime transport. Alongside its energy value, it highlights its contribution to the circular economy through co-products such as... digestate and the Biogenic CO₂According to the EBA, around [number missing] are already being generated in Europe. 25 million tons of digestate per year and the capture sector 1,17 million tons of biogenic CO₂magnitudes that show its capacity to replace fossil and imported resources and contribute resilience to the European productive fabric.
To turn that potential into reality, the declaration proposes 10 priority actions These include the recognition of biomethane in European energy and climate objectives, the removal of administrative barriers to its certification and marketing, the improvement of support and financing mechanisms, the harmonization of national schemes, and more agile and coherent infrastructure planning. Among the milestones cited is the European objective of achieving 35 bcm in 2030 within REPowerEU.
From AVEBIOM's perspective, this European stance is interpreted as a clear sign that biomethane has moved beyond being a mere promise and has become a first-rate industrial, energy, and territorial tool. It not only contributes to reducing emissions but also improves energy independence, promotes waste valorization, and opens up new opportunities for industry and rural areas. This debate will be a central theme at the next edition of [event name missing]. First Renewable Gas Fair, which will be held on the days 29 and 30 September 2026 in the Fair of ValladolidOrganized by AVEBIOM, the event will once again bring together companies, government agencies, technologists, investors, and experts to share real solutions that accelerate the development of biogas, biomethane, and other renewable gases in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America.
