Baleària and Axpo make Europe's first decarbonized trip a reality using biomethane as a renewable fuel

The 133-mile journey between the ports of Barcelona and Ciutadella (Menorca) has been successfully completed by the Baleària ship Eleanor Roosevelt, the first fast ferry in the world with dual gas engines.

The use of biomethane as a renewable fuel on this route has meant avoiding the emission of more than 50 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, which means avoiding using natural gas of fossil origin that negatively affects climate change, and using biogas of renewable origin. taking another step towards the decarbonization of the Spanish energy system.

Baleària thus begins the decarbonization of maritime passenger transport, through the use of biomethane of certified origin as fuel of renewable origin in its ships. Axpo is the first company certified as a biomethane marketer in Spain.
