CycleØ, a European developer, owner, and operator of biogas plants, has announced a €200 million investment to boost biogas production in Spain. The company plans to build, own, and operate up to 30 new biogas plants in the country, with a combined production of 800 GWh per year, enough to meet the gas needs of around 123.000 households. This investment will help reduce the 75% gap between current production and renewable gas generation targets in Spain.
The Biogas Roadmap, published in 2022, sets a target of achieving 10,4 TWh of renewable gas production by 2030, a considerable challenge given the current operating capacity of only 2,74 TWh. Spain has nine biomethane plants, far below the 9 in France, 675 in Germany, and 254 in Italy. CycleØ's investment will help close this gap by developing new facilities in regions such as Catalonia, Aragon, and Galicia.
In addition to its investment plans, CycleØ reaffirms its commitment to the development of the sector by participating in the European ALFA initiative, a project funded by the European Commission to promote biogas in the agricultural community. As part of this effort, the company will host a workshop in May at its Lleida cluster, where it will share knowledge and best practices on biogas production with farmers and other stakeholders in the sector.
The CEO of CycleØ, Laurence Molke, has highlighted the urgency of investment: “We know there is a significant gap in biogas and biomethane generation capacity in Spain, and we are investing now to help close it. We have seen reports that there are no developers willing to invest in biogas plants, and that is simply not true. We are fully funded, ready to act, and committed to Spain for the long term.”
Jordi Berengue, CEO of FNX, the technology subsidiary of CycleØ, also highlighted the importance of sharing knowledge: “We are pleased to contribute our expertise to the ALFA project and help more farmers understand the benefits of biogas for managing waste and reducing emissions.”
With this investment and its active participation in promoting biogas, CycleØ strengthens its role as a key player in the decarbonization of the Spanish energy sector and in the transition toward a sustainable and circular energy model.
