SUEZ launches an innovative biogas desulfurization system at the Almazán biomethanization plant

SUEZ, an exhibitor at the Renewable Gas Show, has launched a regenerative chemical desulfurization system for biogas at its biomethanization plant in Almazán (Soria), a solution that improves the quality of the gas produced and optimizes its energy use.

The system allows for the efficient removal of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) present in the biogas generated during the anaerobic digestion process of organic waste, a compound that can cause corrosion problems and affect the performance of generation or upgrading equipment.

The facility is designed to treat up to 440 Nm³/h of biogas, with H₂S concentrations of up to 2.000 ppm, reducing its content to levels below 100 ppm. This allows the treated gas to be safely used in cogeneration engines or in purification processes to produce biomethane.

The technology is based on a chemical absorption process in which biogas comes into contact with a reactive liquid that captures H₂S. Subsequently, the reactive liquid is regenerated through oxidation and elemental sulfur is separated, which reduces chemical consumption and improves process efficiency.

This type of solution is used in biogas plants, biomethanization facilities, wastewater treatment plants and landfills, contributing to improving the quality of renewable gas and the reliability of the facilities.

SUEZ, which will present its solutions at the upcoming Renewable Gas Exhibition, develops technologies focused on the energy recovery of waste and the production of renewable gases, contributing to the advancement of the circular economy and the decarbonization of the energy system.
