Ten European organizations will collaborate to support livestock farmers in the adoption of biogas systems with the ALFA project

The ALFA project has almost 2 million euros of financing coming from the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme, and for 36 months ten European organizations will collaborate to support livestock farmers in the adoption of biogas systems. It aims to unlock the biogas potential of agriculture and livestock in six EU countries: Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Slovakia and Spain.

This project aims to increase the adoption of renewable energy systems and the role of bioenergy as an energy source, ensuring the reduction of emissions from untreated animal waste and the creation of new jobs and income for this industry. To enable massive scalability of biogas, More than 50 ranchers will receive financial, commercial and technical support services and will join seminars focused on capacity development.

Led by Q-Plan International, the consortium is made up of 10 partners: Agenzia per la Promozione della Ricerca European, Azzero CO2, Center for Research and Technology Hellas, European Biogas Association, European Dairy Farmers, Food & Bio Cluster Denmark, Pedal Consulting, White Research and Sustainable Innovations. This last entity will be in charge of managing the Hub in Spain. Thus, after studying successful cases of biogas adoption, the project will provide business and financial support to the agriculture and bioeconomy sectors, and will design and implement training campaigns.

Biogas production can help the livestock industry to overcome some of the environmental risks it faces due to the considerable amounts of organic waste produced. Livestock manure can induce problems for people and the natural ecosystem, such as odor, unsightly landscape, uncomfortable conditions, and pollution of rivers/wells and land, as well as air pollution and climate instability.
