Environmental permitting for biomethane projects in Zamora

Two new biogas and biomethane projects in Zamora are progressing through their environmental permitting process

Two new biogas and biomethane projects in the province of Zamora, in Corese y San Cebrian de Castro, have recently obtained a favorable environmental impact statement, according to the resolutions published in the BOCYL of April 8, 2026.

The project of Corese, promoted by Axpo Biometano ES1, SLIt includes a plant for the valorization of non-hazardous waste using anaerobic digestion for biogas production, with upgrading and subsequent injection into the grid. The facility will have a treatment capacity of 93.565 tons per year of organic waste from the agricultural, livestock, agri-food, industrial, and domestic-commercial sectors. The resolution includes an estimated production of 5.589.343 Nm³/year of biogas y 3.024.000 Nm³/year of biomethane, plus 8.353 t/year of compost y 2.066 tons/year of liquid organic fertilizer.

En San Cebrian de Castro, the project promoted by Biorig Energy San Cebrián-Zamora, SL It reaches a larger dimension. The planned layout includes a capacity of 198.000 tons per year of organic waste and an estimated production of 18.795.191 Nm³/year of biogas, 10.055.427 Nm³/year of biomethane y 8.739.763 Nm³/year of biogenic CO₂In addition, there is the planned production of 206.817 t/year of EU fertilizer, in a configuration that reinforces the comprehensive valorization approach to organic by-products.

The San Cebrián dossier also includes the necessary connection infrastructure for the project: a 21,264 kilometers underground medium-voltage line or with a 105-meter duct for the shipment of biomethane to the natural gas transport network.

These documents show that concrete projects continue to move forward in territories with available organic resources and the potential to produce renewable gases. This is a significant step in the permitting process for the two plants which, once built, will contribute to expanding biogas and biomethane production capacity in an autonomous community destined to play a leading role in this field.

In the case of San Cebrian de CastroThe process has been accompanied by allegations and observations on various environmental and territorial issues, which also reflects that, in addition to technical and environmental soundness, projects need clear information and dialogue with the surrounding community.

In addition to these two initiatives in Zamora, there are other projects underway. Corese Another, different project, promoted by, remains in public consultation. Norbiogas Biometano III, SLThis confirms the growing interest in this type of facility in areas with strong agricultural, livestock and agro-industrial activity.
