During his participation in the 16th International Bioenergy Congress, held as part of the Renewable Gas Show, the president of the Spanish Gas Association (SEDIGAS), Joan Batalla Bejerano, highlighted the fundamental role of renewable gases in the decarbonization strategy of the gas sector.
Batalla Bejerano began his speech by highlighting the importance of renewable gases, such as biomethane and renewable hydrogen, in the transformation of the energy sector towards a more sustainable economy. He stated that renewable gases are part of the “DNA of the decarbonization strategy” and that they are experiencing a “tipping point” when it comes to biomethane. The president of SEDIGAS highlighted the significant growth in the number of biomethane projects in recent months, with approximately 12 projects already injecting gas into the network and nearly 100 projects announced in different stages of development.
However, Joan Batalla Bejerano also emphasized the need to address regulatory and administrative barriers that still persist on the path towards greater adoption of renewable gases. Despite the advances in regulation, Batalla Bejerano stated that clearer energy policy signals and greater ambition are required in the deployment of biomethane in Spain. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and dialogue with administrations at all levels to achieve administrative simplification and streamlining of processes.
The president of SEDIGAS also highlighted the importance of considering social acceptance and collaboration with the territory in the deployment of biomethane plants, stressing that this is essential to advance the exploitation of the existing biomethane potential in the country.
Batalla Bejerano appreciated the opportunity to speak at the discussion table focused on the gas sector, highlighting the representation of nearly 200 companies that cover the entire value chain of the gas system, from promoters of renewable gases to distributors and marketers.
