The Can Mata controlled warehouse is preparing for the next arrival of its WAGABOX® unit

The construction machinery is activated in the controlled warehouse of Can Mata del PreZero Group, located in Els Hostalets de Pierola about 50 kilometers from Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain).

The Spanish team Waga Energy together with its subcontractors, they have begun the construction of the 800 square meter concrete slab, which will soon house the first unit WAGABOX® in Spain. This new biomethane production unit is currently in the assembly phase in the Grenoble region (France). In a few weeks, the membrane filtration module, the cryogenic distillation module and the rest of the equipment that makes up this small 300-ton refinery will be transported to the Can Mata site through eight special convoys. Once there, they will be assembled and joined using 1000 meters of pipes.

Subsequently, the unit will be connected to the biogas collection system of the landfill. PreZero and to the natural gas distribution network of the Spanish operator Nedgia. Local companies will be mobilized for these operations. The Can Mata WAGABOX® unit will then go into the testing phase, before being put into operation for at least 10 years. Remotely controlled from the Waga Energy headquarters in Grenoble, it will operate 24/7 in a fully automated manner. This unit will recover methane from the degradation of organic matter in landfill waste and transform it into biomethane, a renewable substitute for fossil natural gas, which will be injected directly into the Nedgia network. “We are pleased to join PreZero in this energy transition project in Catalonia. The WAGABOX® unit in Can Mata will produce 70 GWh of biomethane per year, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of 14.000 local homes or a fleet of 200 heavy-duty trucks. In this way, it will avoid the emission into the atmosphere of 17.000 tons of eqCO2 per year. This first project in Spain demonstrates the commitment of Waga Energy and PreZero to decarbonization, using waste to generate local and circular energy.” Baptiste Usquin, CEO Waga Energy in Spain.

This innovative project that contributes to the energy transition has obtained a European grant of 2,4 million euros from the Innovation Fund program, whose objective is to finance innovative technologies that contribute to reducing greenhouse gases.
