Enagas Renovable, an exhibitor and premium sponsor of the 5th Renewable Gas Exhibition and the 18th International Bioenergy Congress, has announced that it will invest more than €36 million in the construction of a biomethane plant in the Murcian municipality of Las Torres de Cotillas, with the plant expected to begin operating in 2027.
The project is currently in the processing phase, awaiting the Integrated Environmental Authorization and the municipal building permit. In parallel, the City Council will soon launch a public consultation to gather residents' opinions, a process that Enagás Renovable supports as a way to resolve doubts and promote transparency.
Antonio Illescas, Business Development Director at Enagás Renovable, has confirmed that the plant will treat approximately 150.000 tons of organic waste annually, primarily manure and livestock byproducts from farms located less than 10 kilometers from the facility. According to Illescas, the estimated production will be around 70 GWh of biomethane per year, equivalent to 2% of the total potential of the Region of Murcia.
The executive emphasized that 120 direct jobs will be created during the construction phase, with 25 permanent positions to be added once operations begin, not including the impact on auxiliary services. He also stated that the plant has been designed with the highest standards: biofilters for odor control, continuous emissions monitoring, and a prudent location, five kilometers from the city center and with direct access from the highway to prevent trucks from passing through residential areas.
More than 90 million euros in Murcia
The Las Torres project is part of an investment package that already exceeds €90 million, including two other plants in San Javier and Santomera. The San Javier plant is in an advanced stage of development, while the Santomera plant could be delayed until 2028.
Enagás Renovable points out that, according to official studies, the Region of Murcia could host more than 40 biomethane plants thanks to its significant livestock and agro-industrial potential. The company aims to position itself as a relevant player in this market, also taking advantage of the high per capita consumption of natural gas in the region.
