Biomethane connection signed in Leiria, Portugal

Genia Bioenergy and Floene connect an ambitious biomethane project to the grid in Leiria, Portugal.

The development of biomethane as a sustainable energy solution has taken an important step forward in Portugal. Genia Bioenergy, an exhibitor at the show, and Floene have formalized the gas grid connection agreement for a new biomethane production plant in the municipality of Amor (Leiria). This plant will transform up to 400.000 tons of livestock and agroindustrial byproducts and waste annually into renewable gas and high-value fertilizers.

With an investment of over €25 million, the plant will be able to produce approximately 110 GWh of biomethane per year, which will be injected directly into the distribution grid operated by Floene. This volume will decarbonize the equivalent of the consumption of approximately 33.000 families, or approximately 70% of the population of the municipality of Leiria.

In addition to the positive environmental impact—an estimated reduction in emissions of more than 300.000 tons of CO₂ equivalent per year—the project plans to create up to 65 direct and indirect jobs, as well as concrete benefits for the rural environment: improved environmental quality, reduction of slurry ponds and odors, use of digestate as fertilizer, recovery of treated water, and the installation of a BioCNG/LNG station to promote sustainable mobility.
