The Mixed Renewable Gas Unit (2016-2023) is a showcase to promote energy efficiency in wastewater treatment, the food industry or the agricultural and livestock sector

The Mixed Renewable Gas Unit (UMGNR) is a joint project of Naturgy, EnergyLab and EDAR Bens, which covers from 2016 to 2023, and is financed by the European Union within the framework of the FEDER Galicia Operational Program 2014-2020, under the call “Aid for the creation, start-up and consolidation of the mixed research unit” co-financed by the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN).

The 1st part (2016-2019) focused on increasing knowledge of biomethane production processes in the WWTP sector, mainly through a system of membranes and biological methanation, focusing on its application in urban mobility, but also in the injection of biomethane into the grid, as well as the thermal use of the losses generated in combustion.

The objective of the 2nd part (2020-2023) is to consolidate the developments carried out and expand the technical scope with the generation of green hydrogen (generated through the turbineing of purified water and through the dark fermentation process) and syngas, as well as evaluate its impact on current infrastructure and consumers.

The Mixed Renewable Gas Unit is a joint venture between a company and a technology center to respond to concerns associated with current problems such as climate change and environmental deterioration. It also represents an important showcase to promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability mainly in the area of wastewater treatment, the food industry or the agricultural and livestock sector. All these industries share the capacity to generate biogas, biomethane, bio-hydrogen and/or syngas thanks to the valorization of some of their organic waste, being able to convert what was previously a problem into a new energy resource (renewable gases) for exploitation. .
