El Production cost and sales price are, in summary, the main challenges of biomethane and biogas, in the opinion of the president of the Forum of Waste Energy Generators (fGER), Sergio Cabellos. This was stated during his speech at the round table on sectoral challenges that served as a seal for the 16th International Bioenergy Congress held in Valladolid.
During his presentation, Cabellos highlighted the importance of municipal organic waste in the REPower Plan for 2030, highlighting however that the agricultural and livestock sector are crucial to achieving 80% of the objectives. However, Cabellos identified a key obstacle: organic selective collection, which currently only covers 15% of its potential, far from the 60% required to meet the objectives.
The president of fGER emphasized that the public administration must promote this process and make decisions about the treatment of improper waste. In terms of technology, Cabellos defended the viability of anaerobic digestion and biomethane production in profitable projects, especially from 30.000-40.000 tons per year.
Furthermore, the president of fGER highlighted the need to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of biomethane production, as established by the waste law. Cabellos announced that fGER will collaborate with the University of Valladolid to prepare a production cost study that refutes the belief that anaerobic digestion is more expensive.
In summary, Sergio Cabellos, president of FGER, underlined the importance of collaboration between public administration, industry and the academic environment as a crucial way to overcome this challenge and meet the ambitious objectives of the REPowerEU Plan.
