The Castile and León Regional Government is advancing its commitment to renewable gases with the environmental approval of a new project in the province of León.
The Junta de Castilla y León has granted environmental authorization to the biomethane plant project in Saint Millán de los Caballeros (León)The facility will add value to more than 150.000 tons of local agricultural and livestock waste annually in the form of renewable gas and organic fertilizers.
The project contemplates an investment of 26 millones de euros and the creation of more than 35 direct jobs, in addition to some 100 positions during the construction phaseThe plant could be operational by the end of 2025 and will allow for the injection of up to 90 GWh of biomethane per year in the natural gas transmission network, enough energy to supply about 13.000 homes.
Among the most innovative elements of the project is the incorporation of a data capture system. 10.000 tons of biogenic CO₂ per year, as well as the use of the digestate generated for agricultural use as fertilizer, in accordance with European Regulation 2019/1009.
The plant will occupy more than 9 hectares and will have nine high-capacity digesters, as well as advanced systems to prevent emissions, control odors and reuse wastewater. All processes will be adjusted to the best available techniques in environmental and industrial safety matters.
The San Millán plant is one of nine projects already approved in the region. There are another 9 projects in the pipeline, confirming Castile and León's potential as a biomethane production hub in Spain from its own organic byproducts, estimated at 110 million tons per year.
