Naturgy will inject biomethane into the gas network

Naturgy will inject the biomethane produced at the Porgaporcs livestock farm into the gas network

NATURGY adapts the biomethane plant installed on the Porgaporcs livestock farm, in the Lleida municipality of Vila-Sana, to inject renewable gas into the group's distribution network in 2023. The company will invest 1,5 million euros in this project to advance in its objective that in 2050 all the gas that circulates through its distribution networks will be of renewable origin.

Starting next summer, this facility, located in Vila-sana, will inject 11,8 GWh/year of biomethane into the gas distribution network, equivalent to the annual consumption of 3.150 homes.

This will be the third biomethane plant that Naturgy puts into commercial operation in Spain and the second for the company located in Catalonia.
The generation and consumption of this renewable gas will avoid the emission into the atmosphere of more than 2.450 tons of CO2 equivalent/year, which is equivalent to planting more than 4.900 trees

With this new plant, Naturgy takes another step in its commitment to the energy transition, local energy production and the circular economy, since it will provide clean gas to the energy system and contribute to the sustainable management of agricultural and livestock waste. this Lleida farm.

This project will contribute to modernizing and improving the rural impact of the agricultural and livestock industry in the territory, strengthening the farm, as well as the local industries that generate organic waste that can be treated in this facility. This will generate more jobs, and therefore, development of the rural area, thus improving territorial cohesion and facing the demographic challenge.

The first biomethane plant that the company put into operation is at the Bens wastewater treatment plant (A Coruña). The second facility, Elena, located in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona), was the first to inject renewable gas from landfill into the Spanish gas network.

With this new project, Naturgy is at the forefront of innovation in the development of this important energy vector, which will contribute significantly to the decarbonization of the Spanish economy in the coming years.
