Denmark's record participation in the Renewable Gas Show

Denmark is once again participating in the Renewable Gas Exhibition with a national stand coordinated by the Danish Energy Export Association . This year, the Danish stand brings together a record 15 companies covering the entire biomethane value chain. Denmark's leadership in the modern biogas sector for over 40 years has fostered the development of reliable and efficient technologies and solutions in the country, which have been successfully installed both in Denmark and abroad. The knowledge, experience, and proven track record of these companies are a sure bet for ensuring the long-term viability of any biogas and biomethane project.

The fifteen companies

A-Consult: Digesters and prefabricated concrete tanks for storing slurry and digestate

Active NS: Clay-based additive that optimizes slurry management and biogas production

Airco Process Technology: Biogas upgrading with membranes, CO2 capture and gas liquefaction

Ammongas: Biogas upgrading with amines, and CO2 capture and liquefaction

Danish Crane Building (DBC): Intelligent overhead cranes, specially designed for biogas plants

Euromilling: Straw pretreatment system and biomass milling, screening and drying equipment

Gemidan Ecogi: Pretreatment of FORSU and agri-food waste for biogas production

Grains: Conveyors and drying systems for all types of waste and biomass

Hexa-Cover: Floating cover for lagoons and tanks for slurry, liquid fractions and digestate

Kinetic Biofuel: Turnkey straw pretreatment system for biogas generation

Linka Energy: Biomass boilers for thermal energy generation in biomethane plants

Oxymat: Oxygen generators to facilitate the biological desulfurization of biogas

Plast Solutions: Corrosion-resistant piping systems specifically designed for biogas plants

Biogas and biomethane in Denmark

Denmark is a country roughly the size of Extremadura, Spain, with 160 biogas plants in operation that produce 1.500 billion Nm3 annually. Approximately 60% of these plants are agro-industrial, accounting for 90% of the biogas produced. They use livestock manure as their primary raw material, supplemented by other organic materials such as straw, food processing waste, and bio-pulp from the treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). The digestate obtained after biogas extraction is typically applied to fields as fertilizer.

Over the last decade, biogas use has evolved from cogeneration to biomethane production. Currently, Denmark has 62 plants that inject biomethane into the natural gas grid. Most are large-scale plants, averaging around 350.000 tons per year, with some processing nearly one million tons of organic material.

It is important to emphasize that the development of biogas in Denmark would not have been possible without the strong support of the government, which concluded decades ago that the socio-economic balance of biogas, and later biomethane, was extremely positive for the country as a whole.

An example: Vesthimmerland Plant

This agro-industrial biogas plant, built in 2020, had an initial treatment capacity of 275.000 tons of livestock manure and other waste from the agri-food industry. In 2022, this capacity was expanded to 500.000 tons, and further expansion to 900.000 tons is currently underway. Today, 80% of the processed material is livestock manure, and the plant injects approximately 40 million Nm3 of biomethane into the grid annually.

Finally, at the end of last June, the world's largest CO2 capture and storage facility was inaugurated at this plant, which is expected to capture 32.500 tons of CO2 per year.

July 2026: Biomethane reaches record percentage of demand coverage

Denmark has the highest percentage of biomethane injected into its gas grid relative to its domestic demand, at 40%, and the government aims to reach 100% by 2035. Last July marked a milestone: it was the first month in history that Denmark met its entire gas demand with locally produced biomethane. The chart from Energinet, the system's technical operator, shows the daily year-on-year percentage change in biomethane production relative to gas consumption during the period from January to August of this year.
