Total Energies biogas

TotalEnergies is committed to the collaborative strategy to promote Biogas

TotalEnergies, as a world-leading multi-energy company, is very clear that the transformation of the energy model to significantly reduce carbon emissions requires powerful and committed actors. The planet requires agents that are capable of responding in all energy areas, offering the best alternative for people and the environment. In this context, its commitment to Biogas is part of a comprehensive vision of energy as a driver of change in society and, therefore, it is already taking steps to convert this renewable gas into a real option in all its areas of influence. , including, of course, Spain.

The objective is ambitious, and for this reason, TotalEnergies is already working to develop partnerships with actors who share the same vision of moving towards a sustainable economy through the promotion of Biogas. In fact, by affirming its goal of being a leading player in the energy transition, TotalEnergies has undertaken a profound process of transformation of its activities and products while continuing to satisfy the energy needs of a growing population.

In this sense, the company is developing a wide range of energies, among which Biogas plays a very significant role, in an integrated approach - from production to marketing - in order to decarbonize its energy offer and achieve its objective of carbon neutrality by 2050, accompanying society on this path.

Commitment to decarbonization and energy sovereignty

Specifically, TotalEnergies aims to develop and operate biogas and biomethane production units, and to market biomethane as a renewable complement to natural gas, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Within this roadmap, which will contribute to accelerating the decarbonization of the energy mix, the company has set the goal of producing 20 TWh/year by 2030 worldwide. This production is equivalent to the annual gas consumption of 2 million homes and will avoid the emission of 4 million tons of CO2/year. The positive impact of Biogas will be relevant for all uses of natural gas, in the industrial, residential and transportation sectors.

Furthermore, locally produced biomethane not only contributes to guaranteeing the supply of gas in Europe, but also favors the economic strength of agriculture, in particular through greater autonomy in fertilization, thanks to the co-production of the digestate.

To achieve its short and medium-term objectives, the company has opted for a collaborative model, in the local environment with farmers, the food industry and local communities and, on a large scale, with leading actors in their respective markets internationally. It is the model that aspires to replicate in Spain, a strategic country for the development of the Biogas option thanks to the important portfolio of services already existing in the country, such as marketing and renewable energies with 3 GW in development.

International reference agent

At an international level, TotalEnergies is an active and prominent agent in the areas of biogas and biomethane, with 37 operational production plants that guarantee its experience and knowledge of the sector. The company intervenes in the entire value chain, from project development to the commercialization of this renewable gas, through private agreements for the purchase of biomethane and its byproducts (biofertilizers, bioCO2).

In France, TotalEnergies acquired Fonroche Biogaz, the French market leader, in 2021 and currently has 700 GWh of installed capacity, with 7 biomethane production units and 11 biogas plants.

Among its international operations, the one carried out in February 2022 stands out, when TotalEnergies and Veolia announced the signing of an agreement to valorize biomethane from Veolia's waste treatment facilities that operate in more than 15 countries.

In February 2023, TotalEnergies and its partner Clean Energy injected their first volumes of biomethane from their Del Rio production unit in Friona, Texas. The biomethane produced is used as an alternative fuel for mobility, contributing to the decarbonization of road transport.

Two months later, the company acquired Polska Grupa Biogazowa (PGB), Poland's largest biogas producer. In this way, TotalEnergies is in first position in the promising Polish biogas market, which represents the fourth power in Europe for the combined production of biogas and biomethane (100TWH/year by 2050).

Thanks to this acquisition, TotalEnergies reaches a global biomethane production capacity equivalent to 1,1TWh.

A key ally in the development of biogas

From a broader perspective, and with a view to developing a collaborative strategy, TotalEnergies has several differentiating factors that make it a reference company. Firstly, it has proven experience in the development of the biogas value chain, supported by consolidated financial strength; assets that it contributes in all the biogas projects that it develops with its partners. In addition, it has R&D specialists who work, together with the teams on the ground, to continually improve its performance at an operational and environmental level.

Secondly, TotalEnergies - displaying its motto 'Safety First' - imposes the strictest quality and safety standards on all its activities. And this applies to both people and the environment, guaranteeing the viability of any biogas project in these areas.

Finally, sustainability is also a priority for Totalnergies. The multi-energy company has been one of the first to obtain ISCC EU certification for its biogas units in France, which guarantees the high quality of the biogas produced with respect to environmental standards and its high level of decarbonization, and gives it access to the Guarantees of Origin and Biogas Purchase Agreements (BPA) markets.

TotalEnergies is a global multi-energy company that produces and markets energy: oil and biofuels, natural gas and green gas, renewables and electricity. Its more than 100.000 employees are committed to increasingly affordable, cleaner, more reliable and accessible energy for as many people as possible. Active in more than 130 countries, TotalEnergies places sustainable development in all its dimensions at the center of its projects and operations to contribute to the well-being of people.
