The World Bioenergy Association has prepared a document with 5 key recommendations for politicians and administrations to take advantage of the potential of biomethane.
Promising initiatives and business opportunities with biomethane are emerging in many European countries, including Spain.
At the same time, the potential is seriously underutilized. Current biomethane production is about 5 bcm, which represents approximately 1% of annual natural gas consumption in the EU. Harnessing the potential of biomethane fully or partially in a country, region, region or municipality requires the creation of comprehensive policy frameworks.
This document outlines five key recommendations that should form part of national or regional biomethane strategies:
- Establish waste management practices that ensure the segregation and valorization of sustainable waste and raw materials for biomethane.
- Reduce methane leaks to the greatest extent possible with available technology.
- A system of Guarantees of Origin (GoO) certificates.
- Support mechanisms for the supply of biomethane.
- Coordinated actions to reduce the time required to obtain the necessary permit approvals for biomethane plants within predefined time scales.
