The company Verdalia Bioenergy, a company specializing in biomethane production, has announced the purchase of a licensed plant project in Toledo from Enerfree. The facility will produce up to 90 GWh annually and is scheduled to begin operating by the end of 2026.
According to the company, construction will begin during the third quarter of this year. The plant will process more than 150.000 tons of agricultural and livestock waste per year, generating enough biomethane to supply approximately 11.000 homes and avoiding the emission of approximately 48.000 tons of CO₂ annually.
Furthermore, the project already has an Integrated Environmental Authorization and a municipal license, and has secured the sale of its production through a ten-year supply contract with a European energy company.
This transaction is part of Verdalia's expansion strategy in the Spanish market, where the company is promoting more than 25 projects in various stages of development. At the European level, the company—which includes Goldman Sachs Alternatives infrastructure funds—has a portfolio of approximately 3 TWh of annual biomethane production, combining its assets in Spain and Italy.
The acquisition of this new project confirms the dynamism of the biomethane sector in Spain. This will be evident on October 1 and 2 at the Valladolid Fair, during the Renewable Gas Fair and the International Bioenergy Congress, where innovative technologies will be showcased, case studies and successful business models will be presented, and the growth prospects for biomethane and its role in the energy transition will be discussed.
