Enagás Renovable, Genia Bioenergy and Grupo Valora promote a biomethane generation plant in Jaén fueled by alperujo and slurry

The project, which contributes to the promotion of decarbonization and the circular economy, has been presented to the Territorial Delegation of Sustainable Development of the Junta de Andalucía in Jaén

This facility would also allow the production of about 80.000 tons of organic fertilizers and would mean savings in CO2 emissions of approximately 120.000 tons annually.

Enagas Renovable ─subsidiary of Enagás─, energy engineering Genia Global Energy, and the waste management company Valora Group, have developed a project to promote the creation of a production plant for 60GWh of biomethane in Jabalquinto (Jaén), which will feed mainly on alperujo (the residue of the olive after obtaining the oil) and slurry.

The initiative thus contributes to the promotion of decarbonization and the circular economy, thanks to the recovery of waste. Specifically, the plant would involve the conversion into biogas of up to 140.000 tons of organic waste each year, including pig manure, remains from the food industry, alperujos and process water, to convert them into biomethane equivalent to around 60 GWh of energy.

In addition, the plant's circular economy processes would allow the generation of fertilizers and organic amendments - materials of plant and animal origin - aimed at improving the fertile capacity of crops and recovering degraded areas.

The project will involve the creation of more than 15 jobs direct, permanent and qualified workers, will also allow the generation of an economic ecosystem that will benefit producers of biowaste (oil mills, pig farms and the agri-food industry), transporters and farmers.

The implementation of this initiative, which would mean savings in CO2 emissions of approximately 120.000 tons per year, is in line with the European Circular Economy Plan - EU Directive 2018/850 - on waste management, treatment and recovery. for municipalities, the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition of the Government of Spain, the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) 2021-2030 and the Energy Strategy of Andalusia 2030.

This project joins the plan of Enagás Renovable, Genia Bioenergy and Grupo Valora to develop three other additional projects in Andalusia, which would allow biomethane production to be achieved of 200 GWh/year in total.
